Priyanka Chopra Signs Multimillion-Dollar First Look TV Deal With Amazon

Priyanka Chopra has signed a two-year multimillion-dollar first look TV Deal with Amazon.  "As both an actor and producer, I have always dreamt of an open canvas of creative talent coming together from all over the world to create great content irrespective of language and geography. This has always been the DNA of my production house Purple Pebble Pictures, and is the foundation of this exciting new endeavor with Amazon," Chopra wrote in an Instagram post.

What Is A First Look Deal?

A first look deal is a contractual agreement between an actor/director/producer/writer and a production company/network/or studio. First Look deal means that the production house will have first rights to consider a project by the actor and also on its distribution, by also providing financial assistance during the development period. Moreover, this also means that in case the production house has a project that befits the criterion of what the actor is expected to do, it'll first approach them for the same.

"My Quest Is To Be Able To Tell Female Stories"

A report from research firm Media Partners Asia forecast that Amazon will reach 17 million subscribers in the country in 2020, just behind market leader Disney Plus Hotstar, with 18 million subscribers.

As per a report by Variety, Amazon hopes that Chopra will help grow the studio’s footprint in India. “My quest really is to be able to tell female stories, work with creators from around the world, and create a cross-pollination of storytelling," she told Variety in an exclusive interview.

"Priyanka is drawn to exciting original content and characters that can resonate globally. She’s a powerhouse producer, and we are thrilled to collaborate with her for years to come,"- Amazon Studios Head.

“Amazon is such a great partner to do that because their reach and outlook is so global. My Amazon television deal is a global deal, so I can do the Hindi language, I can do the English language, I can do whatever language I want," she added.

Priyanka's Willingness To Challenge The Status Quo

“Priyanka’s willingness to challenge the status quo is exactly what global audiences are crying out for, and for this reason alone, she is one of the most unique talents in the landscape right now," Priyanka's longtime manager Anjula Acharia said.

Interestingly, Variety reports that it was only a general meeting between Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke and Priyanka, that led to this first-look deal. “Priyanka is drawn to exciting original content and characters that can resonate globally. She’s a powerhouse producer, and we are thrilled to collaborate with her for years to come," Salke told Variety.

As of now, Chopra is working with Amazon for two television projects- Sangeet and Citadel. While Sangeet is based on the Indian pre-wedding tradition of sangeet, Citadel is a spy series. In February this year, it was announced that Chopra will star as Ma Anand Sheela in Amazon Studios’ movie Sheela. Ma Anand Sheela was the personal secretary of spiritual guru Rajneesh.
