The police found a starved baby beside the body of his dead mother in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune. They broke into the house after the landlord complained of a stench emanating from the house.
They suspect that the woman might have died two days ago, so the baby didn't get any food or water for two whole days. The most tragic part is that none of the neighbours tried to reach out to the family due to fear of COVID-19. They even refused to hold the starved baby because of this.
No one tried to reach out to the family due to fear of COVID-19
"I also have two children, one eight, one six. The baby felt like my own child, he drank milk very quickly as he was very hungry," said Sushila Gabhale, a female constable.
Her colleague Rekha said that the baby was fine, except that it had a fever. "The child had a little fever when we showed him to the doctor. He told us to feed him well, the rest is fine. After feeding the baby biscuit with water, we took the child to the government hospital for a corona test," she said.
Baby tests negative for COVID-19, mother's cause of death not known yet
A COVID-19 test was conducted on the 18-month-old child, and it was found to be negative. The baby has now been shifted to a government creche. His mother's autopsy report is yet to come out. The exact cause of her death will be out soon. However, it is uncertain whether she really suffered from COVID-19 or not.
Meanwhile, the police have gathered something about the woman's husband's whereabouts. Prakash Jadhav, Police Inspector (Crime) said that the woman's husband had reportedly gone out for work purposes to Uttar Pradesh.
