The Press Secretary of the White House Jen Psaki said in a statement that President Joe Biden's administration wants China to "provide independent, verifiable proof" on the whereabouts of Peng Shuai.

The 35-year-old tennis player has gone missing since the day she posted on the Chinese social media platform, Weibo, alleging that former vice-premier Gaoli had sexually exploited her. Women's Tennis Association (WTA) head Steve Simons has threatened to pull out of China if the safety concern over the missing player is not credibly clarified by the Chinese authorities.

Joining the WTA, the United Nations (UN) too insisted on a transparent investigation into the allegations made by Peng Shuai. Many popular faces in tennis have also raised their voice on the issue. It includes Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Novak Djokovic and Nicholas Mahut.

Peng Shuai is a former number one doubles player and has one world title like French Open in 2014 and Wimbledon in 2013. She won this alongside the Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei.

After Shai accused Gaoli of sexual exploitation, WTA at the time asked Chinese authorities to investigate the matter and not censor her post, which was later deleted. The concerns over the missing Peng Shuai keeps rising despite a screenshot of an email posted by the state-led media house CGTN on Shuai mailing to Simons that she is safe.

The Twitter users and authorities pointed out that the language was awkward and the cursor was still visible, which made Simons doubt that either Shuai was forced into writing the email or it is written by someone else.
