Nirmal Kapoor, mother of Bollywood artists Anil and Boney Kapoor, died on May 2, aged 90. She was admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital due to age-related complications, reports said. Dr Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director, Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, told Asian News International, “Nirmal Kapoor passed away peacefully at the hospital around 5.25 p.m. [May 2].” The funeral for Nirmal Kapoor took place on May 3, at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai.

Nirmal Kapoor was the matriarch of one of Bollywood's most influential families. Although not a public figure herself, she was a steadfast presence behind the scenes, anchoring the Kapoor family. Married to the late film producer Surinder Kapoor, she was the mother of actors Anil and Sanjay Kapoor, producer Boney Kapoor, and businesswoman Reena Kapoor.
Nirmal Kapoor was also the grandmother of the new-gen Bollywood stars, Sonam, Harsh Varrdhan, Arjun, Jahnvi, and Khushi Kapoor, among others. She was often seen at family gatherings and milestone events, from birthday bashes to weddings. Anil Kapoor once remarked in an Instagram post that his mother was "the strongest, most radiant soul" in their life.
Boney Kapoor shared a statement on social media on behalf of the Kapoor family. "Nirmal Surinder Kapoor passed away on May 2, 2025, surrounded by her beloved family. She lived a full and joyful life... Her generous spirit and boundless love touched all who knew her. She will remain in our hearts, forever cherished, forever missed," the post read.
Bollywood figures pay final respects
The Kapoor family, including Jahnvi, Sonal, Boney, Maheep, Sanjay, Jahaan, Anshula and others, arrived at Anil and Sunita Kapoor's residence in Mumbai to pay their final respects to Nirmal Kapoor. Other celebrities, including Anupam Kher, Shikhar Pahariya, Rani Mukerji, and Javed Akhtar, among others, also attended the funeral.
