Natalie Portman honoured the female directors snubbed by Oscars with her outfit at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards. The actress wore a cape embroidered with the names of the female directors who were not included by the Academy Awards this year. Dior designed the cape. Natalie said that she wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year in her subtle way reported Time.

The names of the directors written on Natalie's cape are Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), Mati Diop (Atlantics) and Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire). This year the Academy nominated only male directors for the best director category. The male directors nominated in this category are Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), Sam Mendes (1917), Todd Philips (Joker), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman) and Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood). Bong Joon-ho (Parasite) took the award home for his work in Parasite.

Portman called out the Golden Globes for dismissing female directors in 2018 also. While presenting the award for the best director she noted the "all-male nominees." Portman presented the best-adapted screenplay award to Taika Waititiat the Oscars 2020. Many people criticized the academy for overlooking people of colour and women in the nominations. The best actress nominee Cynthia Erivo and comedienne Leslie Jones also criticized the academy for the same reason. In the history of the Academy Awards, only five female directors have ever been nominated. Lina Wertmuller is the first female director who was nominated in this category in 1977. Whereas Kathryn Bigelow is the first woman to win in the category of best director in 2010.
