Narayana Murthy Congratulates Son-In-Law Rishi Sunak: ‘We are proud’

Narayana Murthy, co-founder of the Indian information technology firm Infosys Ltd, congratulated his son-in-law Rishi Sunak on Monday for ascending to the post of Prime Minister of Britain.

Sunak is married to Narayana Murthy’s daughter Akshata Murthy and the couple have two daughters – Krishna, 11, and Anoushka, 9.

Sunak became the Prime Minister less than two months after he lost to Liz Truss in the election race and will be Britain’s first leader of colour.

“Congratulations to Rishi. We are proud of him and we wish him success. We are confident he will do his best for the people of the United Kingdom,” Murthy said in a brief statement after it became clear that Sunak, 42, would be Britain’s next Prime Minister.

According to The Economic Times, Sudha Murty, Sunak's mother-in-law was in Bengaluru, watching the developments and acknowledging wishes. Earlier in the day, she also visited a close family friend and Biocon founder Kiran-Mazumdar Shaw, on hearing about her husband’s death. Shaw had played the host at Sunak and Akshata’s marriage at the Leela Palace hotel in Bengaluru, overseeing the mehndi arrangements.

Sunak and Akshata met at Stanford University in California in the United States when they were MBA students.

Upon meeting Rishi for the first time, Narayan had earlier mentioned in a letter he wrote to his daughter, “when I met Rishi and found him to be all that you had described him to be – brilliant, handsome and, most importantly, honest – I understood why you let your heart be stolen.”

The couple married in Bengaluru in August 2009 in a traditional Indian wedding. Former Karnataka governor HR Bhardwaj, minister BS Yediyurappa, Wipro Ltd chairman Azim Premji, and Indian cricketer Anil Kumble were some of the prominent guests at the wedding.

The couple has also made it to the Sunday Times Rich List and were ranked 222 on their annual list. Together, they have a joint fortune of 730 million pounds.
