A 32-year-old man has been arrested by the Delhi police for cyberstalking and sexually harassing young women on Instagram. The man is a furniture designer by profession and has worked with reputed firms. According to the police, the accused was detained on Saturday.
It was discovered that the man had created multiple fake Instagram accounts and posed as a young woman to manipulate men into sharing photos of their female friends.
Man Held For Online Sexual Harassment
After obtaining the private photos of many women, the accused contacted them on Instagram and allegedly blackmailed them. He had photos and videos of over 50 women on his mobile phone.
The police seized the iPhone and SIM card from the accused, which he had used to commit the crime. In December 2022, one Aman Yadav was arrested for harassing several women online. Yadav had demanded that these women make "objectionable" videos of themselves and threatened to throw acid on them if they failed to meet him.
He had a fake Instagram profile with over 1,100 followers, most of them women. The accused used to message them on Instagram and later threaten to attack them with acid if they failed to meet his demands.
In February 2022, a man named Harish from Bangalore was arrested by police for sending obscenity videos and photos to women via Whatsapp. The accused, 32, obtained the contact information of women whose phone numbers were visible on Facebook and then harassed them on WhatsApp via video call and chat.
The issue came to light after a man filed a complaint with the police about his wife receiving obscene photos and videos on WhatsApp. The Cyber, Economic, and Narcotics Department (CEN) traced the accused using phone records and arrested him.
Punjab Man Held For Harassing Woman Online
The same year, a 33-year-old man from Punjab was arrested for harassing a woman by circulating her private videos on social media. The accused, identified as Jasmeet Singh, was arrested by the police in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, where he lived.
The woman reported the issue to the cyber police, saying that she was being harassed by a man whom she had met through Instagram. After chatting with the woman on video calls and recording her objectionable video, the accused demanded money from the woman.
He had threatened to post them on social media and send them to her family if she failed to pay him. He had also demanded a physical relationship with the woman if she wanted him to delete the videos.
It was found that the accused was using a virtual private network (VPN) for accessing social media. He was arrested, and the phone he had used for the crime was recovered by the police.
