The Bengaluru railway police arrested Naresh Pujari Goswami, a 45-year-old resident of Rajasthan, for scheming a matrimonial fraud that targeted over 250 women across 10 states. Goswami, who had been residing in Bengaluru for the past two decades, employed a sophisticated modus operandi, exploiting matrimonial sites and social media platforms to dupe unsuspecting victims.

The Deceptive Modus Operandi

Goswami's cunning scheme involved the creation of fake online profiles featuring images of young men. Posing as both a customs official and a software engineer, he meticulously manipulated emotions, drawing women and their families into his deceit.

The accused would initially invite women to  Bengaluru under the pretext of discussing marriage arrangements. Upon their arrival, he cunningly diverted them by claiming urgent office duties, stating that his uncle would receive them. Subsequently, using a different phone number, Goswami would impersonate the uncle at the railway station, persuading women to hand over sums ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 for supposed urgent railway ticket bookings.

Executing a disappearing act, Goswami, disguised as the uncle, would vanish under the guise of delivering the funds. Shortly thereafter, he would deactivate both phone numbers, leaving his victims in the lurch.

Victims span across multiple states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat

The Investigation

The railway police initiated the investigation after a woman from Coimbatore complained on February 23. The strategy primarily targeted widows and divorced women. Goswami strategically engaged with women during late-night hours, gaining their trust before extending invitations to Bengaluru.

Railway police inspector Santhosh M. Patil confirmed that Goswami faces charges under sections IPC 419 and 420 for cheating. As of now, statements from 16 women have been recorded, with anticipation of more women coming forward as news of the fraud circulates.

Naresh Puri Goswami's arrest highlights the downside of online interactions, particularly within sensitive domains such as matrimonial platforms. It's crucial for users to be careful and wise in making online connections, making sure that the search for love and companionship doesn't get spoiled by people with malicious intent.
