Addressing a rally in Kolkata on International Women's Day, Banerjee remarked, "The Prime Minister has named a stadium after him. He has put his photographs on COVID-19 vaccination certificates. He is making ISRO send his picture to space. A day will come when the country will be named after him."

The Bengal CM sees strong competition to her seat by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the run-up to the assembly elections beginning next month. She is contesting elections this time for the Nandigram seat and is up against BJP's Suvendu Adhikari.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate list released last week reflected Banerjee gave tickets to a milieu of minorities and oppressed communities. See the full list of 50 women candidates here.

Banerjee continued her attack on the opposition, saying ministers Modi and Amit Shah - both of whom have conducted election rallies in Bengal - only come to the state to bank on votes. "I respect the chair of a Prime Minister but it is surprising to see a Prime Minister lie," she said.

Responding to Modi's statements from a day ago around ensuring women's safety in the state if BJP comes to power, Banerjee said, "He is lecturing us on women's safety. What is the situation of women in BJP-ruled states? What is the situation in Modi's favourite Gujarat?" She added the PM's home state has reported "four rapes and two killings" every day for two years.

The 2021 Bengal assembly election will be conducted in eight phases beginning March 27 and extending up to April 29. Poll results are scheduled to be declared on May 2.
