She was allegedly “pushed” by people at Nandigram on Wednesday, following which she sustained injuries in her hands, legs and neck.

Visitors included party members and actors Nusrat Jahan Ruhi, Mimi Chakraborty, as well as Madan Mitra.

Banerjee was in Nandigram to file her nomination for the constituency, ahead of the West Bengal state assembly polls beginning later this month. Medical reports say Banerjee has sustained injuries in her left ankle, foot, right shoulder, forearm and neck. More here.

Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Trinamool MP said, “At about 6.15 pm, when she was about to leave Birulia Anchal after performing Puja in a temple, a few unknown persons pushed her to the car and forcibly shut the door."

TMC, in a letter, has accused BJP of the 'attack,' focusing pressure on the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take action against the incident. Questioning law and order, the party has also pointed out that the attack against Banerjee occurred within 24 hours of the state police DGP being transferred by the ECI “at the behest of the BJP.”

ECI has responded to TMC's claims, saying their letter is "full of insinuations." Expressing regret over the incident, ECI adds it is "Completely incorrect to suggest that Commission has taken over law & order machinery in the state in the name of conducting elections and appropriated whole governance structure."

Mamata Banerjee Injury: TMC Chief Says She Will Resume Work Soon

Banerjee, from the hospital, issued a statement urging "everybody to maintain peace and refrain from doing anything that can cause inconvenience to anybody." She added, "I sustained injuries in hand, leg & ligament. I was standing near the car when I was pushed against it, yesterday. I am on medication," saying she would resume work in 2-3 days.

The state election will see the TMC supremo face up to her former aide and now BJP candidate Suvendhu Adhikari. See the full list of women candidates for TMC here.
