Lt Gen (retd) Madhuri Kanitkar Is The New Vice Chancellor of Maharashtra University Of Health Sciences

Before this, she was the deputy chief of Integrated Defence Staff  and retired from her role on October 31. She will be replacing Dr Deelip Mhaisekar whose term ended in February this year.

Madhuri Kanitkar Vice Chancellor: Lt Gen (retd) Madhuri Kanitkar took charge as the Vice-Chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik on 1 November. Before this, she was the deputy chief of Integrated Defence Staff  and retired from her role on October 31. She will be replacing Dr Deelip Mhaisekar whose term ended in February this year.

“I feel extremely proud to have been given this responsibility. It is a mission that I have been working on to align medical education and research for patient care and bring in technology to keep student at the centre of activity and this is the best canvas I have got,” Lt Gen Kanitkar told The Indian Express.

Here's what you should know about Dr. Madhuri Kanitkar

  1. She was the third Indian woman to be promoted to the three-star rank in the Armed Forces.
  2. She joined the Army Forces Medical College. She was awarded the President’s Gold Medal for the best outgoing student of the graduate wing.
  3. She got hitched to Lieutenant-General Rajeev Kanitkar. He was also promoted to the three-star rank. With this, she became the first woman to share the same three-star rank as her husband.
  4. Madhuri Kanitkar scripted history by becoming the only female doctor on the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council.
  5. “In the Army Medical Corps, women have been around for years. We train and serve together, shoulder to shoulder. So gender is of little concern. What matters most are capability, professionalism, and competence.”, she had once said.
  6. She was also committed to helping people during the pandemic. Under her leadership, the armed forces launched an operation “CO-JEET” with a mission to aid anti-COVID-19 efforts. These included strengthening medical infrastructure and oxygen supply chains. It also aimed at taking measures to ensure the mental wellbeing of people. Read more about her here.
