Laura Mojica Romero, a Mexican beauty queen and model, has been detained for alleged links to a criminal gang involved in kidnapping. If convicted for the charges against her, Romero could face up to 50 years in jail.
The 25-year-old is currently being held in Veracruz, Mexico. Her name emerged after investigations led authorities to make arrests in kidnapping crimes across the city, as per reports. The official statement claims Romero is one of "eight alleged members of a criminal organisation specialising in kidnap."
All eight accused have been remanded to police custody with investigators given two months to prove charges against them.
"With these actions, the State Attorney General's Office reaffirms its unrestricted commitment to fight head-on against this type of criminal behaviour that seriously damages the freedom of Veracruz citizens," the statement added.

Laura Mojica Romero is a beauty queen and influencer who has won accolades on many counts. She was crowned Miss Earth Oaxaca in 2015 and was a runner-up at Miss Mexico 2019. Last year, she won the title of Virreina Internacional del Café.
Romero has previously advocated for gender equality and called for an end to violence against women, and was quoted saying, "We have to eradicate violence against women, through campaigns and educational talks that make men aware of this issue." She had also brought notice to conversation around breast cancer and other diseases.
