Her father turned his back on her and her ailing mother during her infancy, but destiny had something else in store for her. She is now Kerala's swimming champion.

The young athlete recently won the gold in 200 metres backstroke. She had an outstanding timing of 2.36 minutes.

Her journey to becoming a swimming star

Nirmala grew up under the vigil of her grandmother who used to work as a domestic help to eke out a living for the family.

Hailing from Alanthara in Venjaramoodu, Nirmala is a Plus Two student at MVHSS in Thiruvananthapuram. She was in class I when she started taking swimming lessons. She has won several silver and gold medals in school championships.

Her mother is still ailing but her grandmother Shyamala continues to look after them. Nirmala, however, is happy to have earned enough medals to take care of her training and living expenses. She is currently staying at the sports hostel.

In another instance, a girl who had been living as a child labourer for 12 years is all set to address the Parliament on November 20 on the same issue.

A lot of girls in our country come from broken homes. But it is good to see that some of them refuse to resign to fate, recognise their unique talents, hone them and startle everyone with their success.

More power to you!
