Johnson and Johnson Covid vaccine's single shot has shown 85% efficiency in preventing severe effects of the virus and that the vaccine’s protective benefits kicked into place 28 days after the jab was administered. Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose Covid-19 vaccine was given emergency use approval in India earlier in August. The Union Health Minister had said this will further bolster India's collective fight against coronavirus infection.

"The US-based pharmaceutical company had applied for Emergency Use Authorisation for its jab on Friday and was granted the approval the same day by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI)," a senior health ministry official had said, as per sources.

Johnson & Johnson India believes that this is an important step forward in accelerating the availability of its Covid-19 vaccine to help end the pandemic.

"We are pleased to announce that on 7th August 2021, the government of India issued Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 single-dose vaccine in India, to prevent COVID-19 in individuals 18 years of age and older," a company spokesperson said.

One of the first single-shot coronavirus vaccines developed so far, the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine has already been approved for restricted use in an emergency situation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) Japan, listed in WHO Emergency Use Listing (EUL) and are well-established as millions of individuals have already been vaccinated.
