Iranian Instagram star Sahar Tabar has been jailed for a period of 10 years for her activities over social media. The 19-year-old, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand, rose to fame in 2017 after it was alleged that she used cosmetic surgery to look-like actor and filmmaker Angelina Jolie. Her photographs not only went viral on social media but also earned her the nickname “Zombie Angelina Jolie”. It was later discovered that the pictures were a result of heavy makeup and photoshop. This “Zombie Angelina Jolie” had amassed close to 486,000 followers on Instagram.

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, Sahar was arrested for her online activities on October 5, 2019. She was charged on accounts of blasphemy, instigating violence, encouraging young people to commit corruption, and acquiring money through illegal means. It was also reported that her arrest was due to the complaints of the public; following which her Instagram account was deleted as well.

Masih Alinejad, a journalist from Iran told the MailOnline that she has spoken to Tabar’s lawyer, and he confirmed that the Instagrammer had been sentenced to 10 years in prison in the past few days for ‘promoting public corruption’.

Alinejad had shared the news regarding Tabar’s imprisonment on Twitter as well, writing, “10 years jail for Iranian Instagramer who used makeup & Photoshop to become a zombie Angelina Jolie.”

Asking for Jolie to help Tabar out, Alinejad further wrote in her tweet, “Her mother cries every day to get her innocent daughter freed. Dear Angelina Jolie! we need your voice here. Help us.” Tabar had pleaded for a release earlier citing that she had contracted COVID-19.

Even though Tabar admits that she underwent certain surgical procedures for her nose and lips, she added that her ‘unusual look’ was mostly achieved via makeup and photoshop. “This is Photoshop and makeup. I paint my face in a terribly funny way every time I publish a photo. It is a way of expressing yourself, a kind of art. My fans know that this is not my real face.” Tabar said.

Tabar also stated that being famous had been her childhood dream and that she persisted to build her Instagram profile even though her mother opposed the decision.
