In Hyderabad, a cop has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a woman. The police officer in question, K Chander Kumar, is a Special Branch inspector of Hyderabad Commissionerate. A woman has complained that Kumar allegedly sent her abusive messages when she didn’t respond to his constant calls on WhatsApp.

According to a report in Times of India, Kumar had recently joined the Special Branch and was assigned with East Zone of the Commissionerate. A woman in her 40s, who works at the municipal department of Warangal, has filed a complaint against him, alleging that he has been harassing her.

The inspector reportedly came to know the complainant in 2011 and had a cordial relationship with her while she was working in the city. Recently, when she started avoiding him, Kumar allegedly started continuously video calling her on Whatsapp. He also reportedly sent abusive messages to her when she did not respond, said a police official.

The woman along with her husband then lodged a complaint with Vanasthalipuram police and approached the city police commissioner as well. The woman’s husband is a government employee as well. After an inquiry, police commissioner Anjani Kumar suspended the officer. “The inspector’s conduct has been improper with a lady. Any misconduct by an officer in uniform cannot be tolerated at all. Send WhatsApp message at 9490616555. Help us identify black sheep in police department,” Anjani Kumar tweeted.

This isn’t an isolated report of women facing harassment at hands of policemen. In September 2019, two Assam cops were suspended for allegedly torturing three sisters inside a police station. Out of the three women who were tortured, one was pregnant. She lost her baby due to bleeding caused by the beating. Read more about the story here.
