Gurgaon Couple Tortures Domestic Help, Arrested

The Gurugram couple arrested for allegedly torturing and sexually abusing a minor domestic help have been sacked from their corporate jobs, while police began a search on Thursday for the placement agency through which the girl was employed.

The police complaint alleges that the couple would regularly beat the girl (17), did not let her sleep at night and did not give her food. "Her mouth was completely swollen while injury marks were found everywhere on her body," the complainant has said.

Both have been arrested and charged with wrongful confinement, causing hurt and under the stringent Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

A Hyderabad-based woman's nocturnal habit of staying up late, web browsing, has cost her, her eyesight. Through a series of tweets, a Hyderabad doctor has explained how excessive use of smartphones has caused one of his patients to go blind. Dr Sudhir Kumar explained that the woman, Manju, began experiencing symptoms like seeing bright flashes of light, dark zig-zag lines, and an inability to see anything at times.

The doctor then went on to say that he did not prescribe any medicines for Manju but suggested she minimise the use of smartphones. According to the doctor, she was suffering from smartphone vision syndrome (SVS).

Rescue operations are still being conducted in northern Syria and southeast Turkey, where extensive destruction was caused by a major quake and its severe aftershocks. As emergency personnel painstakingly search the debris for survivors, a miraculous rescue took place in the village of Bisnia, west of Iblid, in Syria.

A whole family of 5 was saved among the survivors in the region of Idlib. Three young children and two adults were pulled from a building's rubble during the rescue. The video of the rescue was shared by the Syria Civil Defence volunteer organisation, The White Helmets.
