Easterling described Newton-John as a “symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.” Newton-John was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and she battled a recurrence of the disease in 2013. In September 2018, she revealed she was battling cancer for the third time. Newton-John said she was diagnosed in 2017 and had cancer at the base of her spine.

The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness Research Centre (ONJ Centre) in Melbourne, Australia was named after the advocate for breast cancer research. Newton-John was inspired to create the Centre after her first cancer diagnosis. Easterling referred to the foundation in his statement and wrote, “In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory to the ONJ foundation.”

Olivia Newton-John is best known for starring as Sandy Olsson, opposite John Travolta as Danny Zuko in the movie musical Grease. The soundtrack for Grease where Newton-John’s vocals were utilised remains one of the world’s best-selling albums of recorded music.

Travolta took to social media and gave his condolences, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John!”
