The election for a president, who will serve a seven-year term, will take place on May 26 and the Syrians abroad will be able to vote at embassies on  May 20.

Who is Faten Ali Nahar?

According to AP News, Nahar, a Damascus resident, became the first female candidate from the capital to have applied for the post of President of the Republic, the country's top job. The Speaker of the Council, Hammouda Sabbagh, said the People’s Assembly has received a notice from the Supreme Constitutional Court that Faten Ali Nahar has submitted a candidacy application in which she announced running for the President. This takes the number of candidacy applications submitted to the assembly to three.

The country is to conduct a presidential election next month, after 10 years of war. This is the second presidential election to take place during the civil war which is expected to be won by President Bashar Assad.

Sabbagh, disclosing very little about the woman candidate, further said that the parliament speaker provided her age, place of birth and her mother’s name in the announcement. She remains an unknown figure in the country and there were no reports on her on social media as well.

The other two candidates have also submitted their names. One of them is a businessman who ran against Assad in 2014. Assad won nearly 90% of the votes in that contest.

Sabbagh mentioned that everyone who meets the conditions specified in the constitution can apply for candidacy, but he/she is not considered a candidate for the presidential elections unless he obtains the support of 35 members of the People’s Assembly.

Assad has been the President since 2000 when he took over after the death of his father, who ran the country for 30 years.
