Last week, Allahabad High Court heard a petition filed by Sanskriti Ranjan who wanted to study at IIT BHU but could not afford the fees for allocation of the seat. Sanskriti Ranjan is a Dalit who wants to pursue Mathematics and Computing Course. It is a five years Bachelor and Master of Technology dual course.

Ranjan had scored a rank of 1469 in the Joint Entrance Exam Advanced (JEE) exams this year.

The 17-year-old lost her seat at the institution because she could not afford Rs 15,000. She and her family faces economic difficulties, which got worse because of the pandemic. Hearing her case, Justice DK Singh directed the institute in Varanasi to confirm her seat, while the Justice pitched the amount for the girl's education. He handed over the amount after the court hours.

On December 6, Ranjan confirmed that she got her admission. By then, her story had gotten into headlines and Singh's deed won people's hearts. On the same day, as her admission got confirmed, a Mumbai-based doctor stepped forward to sponsor her studies.

Dr Sonal Chauhan, who works as Consultant MD, DMRE, MBBS at the Wadia Children Hospital in Mumbai had submitted before Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh, her desire to support Ranjan's education. Ranjan came to know about this and thanked her on December 6.

After the Allahabad High Court's judgement, the response has been overwhelming. The Counsel for the petitioner, Ranjan, said that many IIT Alumni's have also come forward to help.

Dr Chauhan's stepping forward to help was recognised by the Court, who said, "This is quite heartening that capable section of the society is willing to sponsor the study of a meritorious girl student from the lower strata of the society. The Court places appreciation on record to all such persons, who have volunteered to sponsor an entire study of the petitioner."

But not all are as fortunate as Ranjan, the court had rightfully pointed out. There are many students out there who want to pursue studies but are unable to do so because of economic and societal refrainment. Considering this, the court has asked the State Government as well as the Centre to state before the court of  "scheme/fund" for sponsoring the studies of such bright students. They need to present it by December 20.
