Droupadi Murmu hails from Rairangpur in the Mayurbhanj district, where she lives with her brother, Taranisen Tudu, and his wife in her husband's house, built in the 1990s. Droupadi Murmu has served as a governor in Jharkhand. The state is governed by Mukti Morcha, being a state with a tribal majority.
Droupadi Murmu has also served as the vice-president of the Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the BJP. She is also Jharkhand’s first woman governor and Odisha’s first female tribal leader, elected as governor, in any Indian state. In June 2022 she was chosen by the BJP as the National Democratic Alliance’s nominee for President of India.

"I just have no words to describe how proud and happy we are that she is becoming the First Citizen. The first woman from the Santhal tribe will be India's first citizen. Think how happy we all must be. She is very simple. She is defined by her simplicity. She gets up early, meditates, goes for her morning walk, and does Yoga." said Droupadi Murmu's brother, Taranisen Tudu, in an interview.
He also added that even during her time as a governor, she only ever used a car that her daughter gifted her, indicating her personality.
Earlier congratulating her on nomination, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted- “Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, downtrodden as well as marginalized. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure. I am confident she will be a great President of our nation."
