Delhi Government Announces Compensation For Shahdara Sexual Assault Survivor

The Chief Minister of Delhi announced relief measures and compensation for Shahdara rape survivor.

The Shahdara case from Delhi involving sexual assault and public shaming of the rape survivor shook the nation after the video of the incident made rounds on social media. The 20-years-old woman was allegedly abducted and raped by illegal liquor vendors and was later shamed by the women from the neighbourhood who paraded her in the nearby areas with a garland made of slippers. People stood laughing and cheering at the horrendous scene.

As per the reports by Indian Express, her husband was not present at home when the crime occurred and he informed the police after being informed about the matter. 

Compensation For Shahdara Rape Survivor By Delhi Government:

Out of the 11 people arrested in the concerned case, 9 are women. The arrest was made based on the statement provided by the survivor and the video which surfaced online. The police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case.

The Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Swati Maliwal met the survivor and called for strict action against those accused. As per the statement released by the commission, local women were allegedly “instigating” men to continue raping the survivor.

On January 31, 2022, the report of her 18-year-old sister being assaulted by the people also surfaced. The case was registered at the Kasturba Nagar police station against eight women, one man, and three juveniles who have already been arrested. 

The Delhi government took cognisance of the incident and Chief Minister of Delhi NCR Arvind Kejriwal announced aid to the rape survivor. He announced providing Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the survivor. The Delhi government has also decided to appoint an advocate and fast-track the case so that justice can be given to her as soon as possible. 

In a report by ANI, Kejriwal also added- "The Delhi government will do whatever it can do to give justice to her"
