The incident has sparked a nationwide outrage, both online and offline, triggering protests by civil society groups and activists. The Old Nangal crematorium priest and three male employees near Delhi Cantonment in south-west Delhi were subsequently arrested for allegedly raping and killing a nine-year-old Dalit girl. They also stand accused of cremating her body allegedly without her parents’ consent. As per her parents, on the evening of August 1, the girl went to fetch water from the electric cooler installed at the crematorium and the priest and his companions later called the girl’s mother to inform her that her daughter has been electrocuted and died.

The family told the police that the accused also showed burns on her body. On August 17, Delhi police dismissed the claims and said they got the cooler checked by electricians to probe if she was electrocuted by the appliance. “No sign of a short circuit in the water cooler," news agency ANI reported on Tuesday. However, it is possible, she may have touched a live wire between the cooler and the main switch, noting here that it is too early to say that she did not die of electrocution, the officer clarified in the ongoing investigation, Hindustan Times reported.

All the four accused will be charge-sheeted by the end of this month.

Justice Yogesh Khanna, who was hearing a plea by the parents of the deceased girl for creating a special investigation team (SIT) for a court-monitored probe, directed the police to file the status report before the next hearing which is scheduled on November 8. Khanna has, however, declined to pass any direction for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigation monitored by the court into the case as it is in its initial stages. An SIT has already been constituted after the case was transferred from the local police station to Crime Branch.

The family registered a case in a Delhi police on the suspicion that the girl may have been sexually assaulted and murdered since her body was cremated in a hurry and her mother had allegedly spotted multiple injury marks on her body. More here.
