The female food blogger Jin, who goes by Tizi in her online videos decided to showcase another bizarre food trend in order to entertain her audience. She allegedly bought a great white shark illegally and ate it for the sake of her online audience in April 2022.

Chinese Blogger Eats Great White Shark

When China's Sichuan region's authorities got to know about the incident, a case was filed against the food blogger for breaking Chinese wildlife protection laws. Jin is popular for posting mukbang videos and has eaten many bizarre dishes and participated in extreme food challenges to entertain her audience.

The food blogger makes videos on Douyin, the Chinese version of the social media app TikTok and enjoys about 7.8 million followers. She has reportedly eaten ostriches and crocodiles in her earlier videos.

The authorities have recently fined the blogger 125,000 yuan (15 lakh rupees) for illegally buying and consuming a great white shark, which is considered a vulnerable species as they face a high risk of extinction in the country.

The illegal trade and possession of the protected species results in a fine and prison sentence. Jin reportedly bought the 6.6 foot shark illegally from the Taobao shopping platform of Alibaba for around 90,000 rupees and the authorities have also arrested two individuals who were involved in the purchase of the shark.

China banned the trade and consumption of wild animals during the onset of COVID-19 in a bid to prevent zoonotic diseases from spreading. After the ban, the authorities started taking strict actions against food bloggers making mukbang while eating wild animals.
