American actor Busy Philipps recently opened up about her older child Birdie being gay and how she is striving to support them as a mother. Talking on her podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best earlier this week, she revealed that 12-year-old Birdie Leigh is out and proud, and prefers they/them pronouns. The 41-year-old, who has two children with writer Marc Silverstein, also elaborated that she has been trying her best to inculcate Birdie's pronouns.

On Thursday's episode, the Dawson's Creek star said, "Birdie told us at 10 years old and we immediately… I mean obviously, I knew that Birdie knew." She added that she wanted "Birdie to be in control of their own narrative and not have to answer to anybody outside of our friends and family if they don’t want to."

Busy Philipps Opens Up About Birdie's Identity

Philipps said, "I love that kid... I said: 'You know Bird, I've been doing a bad job with the pronouns.' I f**k up sometimes but we're, I'm trying my best at that too."

She also apparently only proceeded to mention Birdie's gender identity after they gave her the go-ahead. She quoted them saying, "I don’t give a f**k. You can talk about how I’m gay and out. You can talk about my pronouns. That would be cool with me. That’s great.’ So I said, ‘OK, I can talk about it on the podcast.'"

Philipps On Freaks and Geeks Controversy

Philipps, who starred in acclaimed television series Freaks and Geeks between 1999 and 2000, has been vocal about having faced physical assault by co-star James Franco. In her 2018 memoir titled This Will Only Hurt a Little, she revealed that Franco "threw" her to the ground while filming a scene and that he was a bully on set. She said that she recalled the incident "to illustrate a larger point about the way women are treated in this business and in life."

Though Franco reportedly denied all claims, he has been accused of misconduct by other women on separate occasions. Variety reports that an acting student of Franco's alleged that the now 42-year-old used removed the vaginal guard during intimate scenes. "I got it in my head pretty quickly that, OK, you don’t say ‘no’ to this guy," she said.
