Relatives of a patient reportedly assaulted a female gynaecologist on Monday (Dec 4) at Kasturba Hospital in Delhi after she allegedly denied admission to the patient. This led the hospital doctors to go on a protest, disrupting emergency and OPD services. The strike was called off in the evening after the police filed a complaint against two women assaulters.

"After half an hour, a mob descended on the casualty ward and started misbehaving with the gynaecologist. Two women pulled her hair, pushed her and abused her for not admitting the patient," said a senior doctor of the Municipal Corporation Doctors' Association, Millennium Post reported.

She added that the assailants even thrashed the security guard posted outside the emergency ward.

The doctors withdrew the protest after ensuring police deployment in the hospital. They also made sure there was increased security outside the emergency ward.

"We are in touch with the police. They will soon arrest the culprits. I have asked the doctors to stop the protest considering the plight of patients coming to the hospital," said a senior official at Health Administration, New Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Cases of doctors being assaulted have become a common affair. Earlier, on Nov 27, a 500-strong mob vandalised Kalyan Hospital in Mumbai and assaulted the hospital staff and doctors. The attackers included relatives of Rohit Bhoir, who was under treatment in the hospital. They alleged that the 22-year-old had died during an operation and that the attending doctor was responsible for the death.

The mob held many patients and hospital staff hostage and a riot control team had to be called in.

It is high time the authorities ensured greater security to doctors!
