Assam Govt Launches Drive Against Child Marriage

More than 1,800 people have been arrested in a massive crackdown on child marriage in Assam so far, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said today, 3 Febraury.

"State-wide arrests are presently underway against those violating provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. 1800 + have been arrested so far. I have asked @assampolice to act with a spirit of zero tolerance against the unpardonable and heinous crime on women," tweeted Sarma.

The Assam cabinet has decided to charge men who marry girls below 14 years of age under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences or POCSO Act, while the men who have married teen girls in the 14-18 years age group will be charged under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

Bengaluru: Man, 20, beaten to death for allegedly chatting with girl

A 20-year-old youth was brutally murdered for allegedly chatting with a girl in Bengaluru, the police said on Thursday. Four persons have been arrested in connection to the youth's murder, they added.

According to officials, the victim has been identified as Govindaraju.

"The accused have been identified as Anil, Lohit, Bharat, and Kishore. They have been arrested for the murder of a 20-year-old for allegedly chatting with a girl," DCP North Division Devaraj told the media.

Pregnant woman, husband burnt alive after car catches fire in Kerala

In tragic news, a pregnant woman and her husband were burnt alive yesterday as their car caught fire while they were going to a district hospital after she complained of labour pain, in Kannur. According to the police, there were five occupants in the car and people sitting at the rear escaped after alert bystanders helped them escape. Eyewitnesses said the couple could not get out after their seat belts got entangled.
