In Kasganj, about 270 km west of the capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, a 22-year-old man was found dead in the police station. The police have called it a case of suicide but the man's family members have alleged police officers' hand in his death.
The man identified as Altaf was reportedly brought to the police station on Tuesday morning for questioning in the case filed against him. The man was accused of kidnapping a minor girl and forcing marriage with her.
The police chief of Kasganj police station Rohan Pramod Bothre releases a video statement on Twitter in which he claimed that the deceased man asked if he could go to the toilet at the police station. After a few minutes, he did not return. When the police officers went inside to check on him, they found him dead.
What The Police Have Claimed:
The police chief said, "He was wearing a black jacket and it appears he hooked the string, attached to the hood of the jacket, to a tap in the washroom and tried to strangle himself. He was brought out unconscious and taken to the hospital. He died within 5-10 minutes." Soon there were reports that the chief has now suspended five policemen citing "negligence".
Allegations Against Police in Altaf Suicide case:
Altaf's father, Chand Miyan spoke to reporters and said, "I handed over my child to the cops. But I suspect they are involved in the hanging."
Many raised questions if the police station had CCTV cameras installed but so far there has been no confirmation about how many police stations in Uttar Pradesh have it. As per the order by Supreme Court, all police stations in the country and investigations agencies should have a camera facility. Security cameras should cover interrogation rooms, lock-ups, entries and exits, said the top court.
