Actress-Comedian Amy Schumer Diagnosed With Lyme

Actress-comedian Amy Schumer recently revealed that she was diagnosed with Lyme disease earlier this year, in the summer.

The "I Feel Pretty" actress posted on Instagram to share the news with her 10.1M followers. She wrote: “Anyone get LYME this summer? I got it and I’m on doxycycline. I have maybe had it for years.” Additionally, she also wrote that she’s been staying out of the sun and taking some herbs called Lyme-2. Inviting her fans to give her their advice, she also provided her contact details in her Instagram bio. She ended her post by saying that she feels good and is excited to get rid of the disease.

What Is Lyme?

Lyme disease is fairly common in America and Europe. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, America, the disease affects roughly 300,000 Americans every year. Bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme and certain species of ticks lead to its transmission. Symptoms of the disease include a red rash, joint pain, headaches, fever, and fatigue. Doxycycline is a strong antibiotic that treats bacterial infections. Usually, reports say, consumption of antibiotics can lead to a full recovery, though some people can also have long-lasting symptoms. An early diagnosis of the disease is beneficial and decreases the associated risk.

Reports also suggest that the susceptibility to ticks (and Lyme) has increased lately. A major reason for the same is that people are spending more and more time outdoors amidst the Coronavirus pandemic.

Within hours, the American entertainer received numerous likes on her post. Fans and friends also commented with useful suggestions/tricks as well as wishes for her good health. One user wrote, "make sure you’re seeing a lyme literate doctor so you aren’t jumping through hoops." Another well-wisher advised Schumer to “Knock.It.Out” and take medicines religiously as “long term Lyme is a serious deal.”

Other Celebs With Lyme

The Trainwreck star is one out of the many celebrities who have been diagnosed with Lyme disease in the past. Personalities such as Yolanda Hadid, Anwar Hadid, Avril Lavigne, and Shania Twain have spoken in detail about their experience with Lyme.

Model Bella Hadid has been living with the disease since the age of 14. In 2016, her Instagram post had described it as an "invisible disease." Earlier this year, Justin Bieber had also revealed his Lyme diagnosis on social media. He wrote: "It's been a rough couple years but getting the right treatment that will help treat this so far incurable disease and I will be back and better than ever.”
