10 Things To Know About BJP Leader Khushbu Sundar's Car Accident On Her Way To ‘Vel Yatra’

Police said they have arrested both drivers involved in the accident for rash driving

Tamil Nadu based politician Khushbu Sundar, who resigned from the Congress party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month, met with an accident on Wednesday near Melmaruvathur. "A tanker rammed into us. With your blessings and God's grace I am safe," she tweeted, sharing two photos of her severely damaged car and assuring that she is not hurt.

Here are ten things you to know about the incident :

1. Khushbu Sundar's vehicle met with an accident on November 18 morning.

2.  The actor-turned-politician Sundar claimed that a container had rammed into her vehicle. However, a police officer told NDTV that Sundar's car "brushed on the container carrying washing machines while overtaking." Sundar, on the other hand, added that the police “are investigating n questioning the driver to rule out any foul play.”

3. Police said they have arrested both drivers involved in the accident for rash driving.

4. The accident took place near the town of Melmarvathur in Kancheepuram district, about 97 km from Chennai, reports TOI. Sundar, 50, was travelling to Cuddalore district to participate in a Vetri Vel Yatra (Victorious Spear March).

5. After the accident, Sundar clarified that she is still determined to participate in the event. She wrote on Twitter that she will “continue my journey towards Cuddalore to participate in #VelYaatrai”.

6. Vetri Vel Yatra, scheduled to be held from November 6 to December 6, was conceptualised in honour of Lord Muruga known for his "Vel" or spear.

7. Reportedly, Vel Yatra is being held by BJP, despite being banned by the state government. This year the state government had denied permission for the yatra due to COVID-19 pandemic.

8. In October,  Sundar resigned from the Congress party after a stint of six years, to join BJP.

9. She began her political career by joining Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party in 2010. It was soon after she played the role of the political leader and activist Periyar’s wife Maniammai in a biographical film.

10. Sundar is known for her work as an actor in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi films. She began her career as a child artist in Bollywood and was seen in films like The Burning Train, Laawaris and Naseeb. She has also worked as a producer and television show host.
