Indie dogs are truly the cutest and the most loyal Indians. Mostly referred to as community dogs, you will find them in their own territory (streets), wagging their tails at the slightest glimpse of their loved human beings. These loving dogs often find themselves without a home, but some Indian celebrities are changing that narrative.
The Supreme Court of India's recent ruling on Delhi's stray dog population has caused nationwide uproar among animal lovers. Even many celebrities have been raising awareness about the ethical treatment of animals without shelter. For many of them, this commitment isn’t just about social media posts or impassioned debates; it is a lived reality.
Here are some Indian celebrities who have adopted or passionately advocated for the adoption of Indie puppies.
John Abraham
“I believe there is God on Earth, it’s a dog,” John Abraham once said proudly. The actor has two pet dogs named Bailey Abraham (mother) and her pup Sia Abraham. John has also worked with the non-profit animal rights organisation, PETA.

Ratan Tata
The late industrialist Ratan Tata was a champion for stray animals and even facilitated their rescue and rehabilitation. His will reportedly ensured lifetime care for his pet dog. From establishing an animal hospital and shelters to allowing special entry for strays in his luxurious Taj hotel, he showed what it truly means to be an animal lover.
Sidharth Malhotra
Sidharth Malhotra's Jerry is another celebrity Indie dog we cannot help but adore! The actor also had a Boxer dog named Oscar, who died a few years ago. The actor has often shown his love for dogs on social media or at celebrity events. He once also modelled for a photo shoot with a rescue dog named Shanti, who was up for adoption.
Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu
Soha and Kunal are the proud dog parents to Nimki, Mishti, Masti, Oreo, and other pawsome creatures. They have also volunteered at adoption camps and shelters, and used their social media to urge fans to adopt Indies.

Farah Khan adopted her rescued Indie dogs, Gulab and Jamun, when they were puppies in 2018. The duo has become an inseparable part of their family. They also have a Shih Tzu puppy called Smoochy.
Sunny Leone
Actress Sunny Leone has adopted several dogs, including her loving indie pup, Lilu, who died in 2024, aged 17. Leone has also been the face of a PETA campaign in the past, advocating for animal rights.
Randeep Hooda
Actor Randeep Hooda is proudly a parent to Bambi, an Indie dog he adopted in 2018. He has also urged his fans to 'adopt, don't shop' on many occasions.
Madhuri Dixit
Back in 2019, actress Madhuri Dixit adopted an Indie dog. She said on social media, “The smiles on our faces show how this little pup stole our hearts! Welcome to the family, Carmelo Nene 🐾♥ I urge all animal lovers to adopt pets & see how they fill your life with joy.”
Rupali Ganguly
TV actress Rupali Ganguly has always shown her love for community dogs. She has adopted Gabbar (who is in heaven) and Coffee (calls him her favourite co-star). Not just this, she is often seen playing with the stray dogs on her TV sets.
Hrithik Roshan
Calling himself a proud pet parent, Hrithik Roshan adopted his Indie pup, Mowgli, in 2022. The actor adopted the beloved puppy from a rescuer who reportedly found him under a car on the streets of Mumbai.
There are many such individuals who have set an example toadopt and not shop. If you plan to adopt dogs soon, Indies will be your best friend. Even if you don’t adopt, treat them kindly and as your own on the streets.
