Interview with Pankaj Tripathi Beti Bachao se zaada zaruri hai bete ko samjao aur bete ko behatareen admi banao: Pankaj Tripathi’s on-screen portrayal of Narottam Mishra in Bareilly Ki Barfi is one of his iconic roles. The sweet and simple father of a small town in India is very progressive and shares a great bond with his daughter.

Tripathi’s Mishra is a deviation from the usual father-patriarch’s we were used to seeing on-screen who assumed that they had the right to determine their daughter’s fate. Narottam Mishra knows his daughter smokes and he believes, that she has the right to choose her life partner. Recently, we also saw him in the film Gunjan Saxena where we essayed the role of Gunjan’s father. Her pillar of strength and the wind beneath her wings.

We asked Pankaj And Mridula Tripathi about how much the actor’s relationship with his daughter reflects the on-screen relationship between Bitti and Narottam Mishra. Mridula Tripathi agrees that his relationship with his daughter almost reflects the on-screen relationship, they share a great bond and frankness. The couple agrees they would never encourage her to smoke simply because it is unhealthy. Mridula says, “I always say every daughter should have a father like him. She is the sole purpose of his life.”

How important is two-way communication in a father-daughter relationship?

Pankaj Tripathi says it is very important for daughters to have supporting fathers. As an actor, he believes in borrowing from real life in his on-screen portrayals. He shares “After Bareilly Ki Barfi and Gunjan Saxena  many young girls have told me when after watching you essay a father’s role we thought that everyone should have a father like that.” He shares that many young girls have told him that they either watched these films with their fathers or made them watch the film later on.

Mridula Tripathi shares their daughter also has a significant role in making the relationship special. The father-daughter duo are avid readers and the share and discuss everything. They are not shy about talking to each other about anything. There is no hesitation between them.

Pankaj Tripathi says, “If we want change then the change has to start at home, we have to try to change, change the ethos of the family we belong to, then gradually the world will change too. People are educated and progressive to understand the need for change.”

“Sometimes it bothers me a bit, that we bring up a daughter and a son differently. I understand that sometimes it stems from concern. We let a boy go out to play but not do the same for a girl. Yes, they should get the freedom to do what they want,” the actor shares.

He finally adds, “That more than Beti Bachao” it is important to “bete ko samjao aur bete ko behatareen admi banao” then we won’t need to save our daughters anymore.
