As per a trailer for the documentary that released December 13, the film contains footage Petito shot of herself and her travels with her fiance Brian Laundrie, who, weeks after her remains were found, also died. The Murder of Gabby Petito, containing interviews with Petito’s parents and journalists on the case, appears to delve deep into the highly-sensationalised death.
The documentary will also examine the role of social media sleuthing by the TikTok and other online communities that were instrumental in piecing parts of the Petito puzzle together.
About the Gabby Petito case
Petito, an influencer and vlogger who documented her travels on her Nomadic Statik channel, undertook a cross-country trip with Laundrie in July 2021. The two were to cover multiple US national parks in their trailer van over several months. On September 1, Laundrie made a return home to Florida, alone. Ten days later, Petito’s family filed a missing persons complaint and an intensive search began for her around Wyoming, where she was reported to have last been seen.
Her remains were found at Grand Teton National Park on September 19, with the coroner ruling she died by manual strangulation. Read here.
By this time, Laundrie, whom investigators had named a “person of interest” in the Petito case, had gone missing too after telling his parents he was leaving for a hiking trip. A manhunt was launched and a month later, on October 20, his remains were found at an environmental park in Florida. Autopsy results showed Laundrie died by suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
