The teen will be seen playing the role of Rhea, a teenager who is passionate about creating DJ mixes that blend the textures of the Indian heritage and the rest of the world.  Bollywood actor Abhay Deol has also been roped in to play the lead role in the upcoming Indian-American film which was announced recently.

Talking about featuring in the movie, Vandanapu told Mid-Day that seeing herself on screen is as much life-altering as it’s culture-defining for her because they have lacked representation for so long. The 16-year-old also talked about how hard it is being an Indian in the US and to see people going through similar struggles like hers can be empowering.

aShe will be seen playing a high-school student who follows her passion for DJing. In her role, Vandanapu aims to create beats by blending music from the Indian heritage, however, she lacks the courage to follow her passion. Rhea belongs to a family which owns an Indian restaurant in the US and they are a close-knit unit of multigenerational individuals. The movie also casts British-Indian actor Meera Syal in prominent roles.

Deol reportedly plays Rhea’s father Arvind Kumar in the Manjari Makijany-directed venture. Sharing the trailer last month, he explained how this new-age film is a "departure" from the edgy and alternative narratives that he is known for. He went on to call this film more special as it challenges the status quo and caters to a much younger audience.

While Syal will be seen in the role of Rhea’s grandmother, Aryan Simhadri will be playing the role of her younger brother. The movie also features American actors Michael Bishop who plays the role of Max, Anna Cathcart, Jahbril Cook and Kerri Medders among others.

Vandanapu further stated that she felt marginalised as an adolescent having faced many instances where she was taunted by her own classmates in America who told her to "go back to your country". She noted, "It’s also that lingering feeling of being left out, and that you don’t have the same opportunities as others because of your skin colour." Now, she says she is glad to be a part of this film which will put the spotlight on an Indo-American teenager.
