Remakes of Southern films form for a big chunk of the release line up of Hindi movies every year. And why wouldn't it. The recent success of Allu Arjun-starrer Pushpa: The Rise on a national scale proves that entertainment has the power to cross language barriers, and a good concept, a tight script and a mass appeal will always draw audiences to the theatre. So why fix what ain't broke and recycle a package that has already clicked with the viewers?

Over the years, we have seen remakes of many popular southern films do equally well in Hindi. Be it Salman Khan's Wanted, Ajay Devgn starter Singham, or Rowdy Rathore featuring Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. And it's not just action films from down South that get Hindi remakes. Be it comedies like Hulchul or romantic films like Saathiya or OK Jaanu, they are all inspired by regional southern films.

So here are the upcoming Hindi remakes of Southern films to look out for in 2022:

Vikram Vedha

A remake of the 2017 Tamil-language film action thriller is underway currently, and is expected to come out in 2022. Directed by Pushkar Gayathri, the remake of Vikram Vedha will feature Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Radhika Apte and Rohit Saraf in lead. Roshan will be reprising the role of Vedha, played by actor Vijay Sethupathi in the original film. The actor shared his first look from the sets on his 48th birthday back in January. Khan, on the other hand will star in the film as Vikram.

The makers of Vikram Vedha announced that the Hindi remake is set for a theatrical release on September 30, 2022.

Anniyan

Blockbuster film Anniyan, which was dubbed and released in Hindi as Aparichit, will be remade in Hindi by director Shankar. Anniyan's Hindi remake will feature actor Ranveer Singh playing the triple role in the psychological thriller film. According to reports, the remake is expected to release in the second quarter of 2022.

Driving License

The 2019 comedy-drama film will be remade in Hindi language as Selfiee starring actors Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi. The remake will be directed by Raj Mehta, who is known for films like Good Newwz and is also directing the upcoming feature Jug Jugg Jeeyo with Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani.

Master

2020 action-drama film Master was a hit during the pandemic lockdown. While the Tamil original film was led by actors Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi, its Hindi remake will star Salman Khan in the lead.

HIT

A crime-investigative thriller released in 2020, HIT's Bollywood remake will star actors Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra in lead roles and the film is currently under production. The film follows the investigation in the case of a missing girl by a Homicide Intervention Team officer.

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo

The Hindi remake of comedy film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo is currently under production as Shehzada starring actors Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon. According to reports, the film is being directed by Rohit Dhawan and will possibly come out in November 2022.
