Taali revolves around the life of transgender activist Gauri Sawant based in Mumbai. She was one of the key petitioners of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) case that recognised transgender as the third gender.

In an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Sawant shed light on her early struggles, "Acceptance is something that is very dear to everyone, but for the transgender, it seems like they are at war each day – against the society, government, family and sometimes with their community as well. True change happens when reformers are celebrated. It’s also about a rare instance that gives people hope to accept who they are and live a life beyond gender discrimination."

Sawant is also the founder of a trust called Sakhi Char Chowghi, which was started in the year 2000. The trust works towards helping transgender people and people with HIV/AIDS. Her initiatives aim at fighting for transgender rights, promoting safe sex and assisting transgender people with necessary counselling. Sawant is also the goodwill ambassador of the Election Commission in Maharashtra.

In 2008, Gauri Sawant adopted a girl named Gayatri after her mother died of AIDS. The multiple-episode series will also show how she became the country's first transgender mother.
