Shah Rukh Khan had a remarkable 2023, delivering three blockbusters – Pathaan, Jawan, and Dunki. However, the preceding years were challenging for him and his family. As he was honoured with the title of Indian of the Year 2023, Khan stepped onto the stage with a prepared speech, expressing not only gratitude for the award but also reflecting on the challenges faced by him and his family in the past four to five years.
In the last four to five years, Shah Rukh Khan and his family navigated through a tumultuous journey, a sentiment likely shared by many due to the impact of COVID-19 and other challenges. Despite facing setbacks, including the underperformance of most of his films, the actor remained unbothered by “a lot of specialists and analysts who started writing his "death-knell." He added, "some idiots did the same, which actually is the same thing, analysts and idiots."

Khan reflected on the personal aspect, acknowledging bothersome incidents that taught him the value of maintaining quiet composure and working diligently with dignity. Life's unpredictability became a lesson, emphasising the importance of staying grounded even in moments of apparent perfection.
But this is a time you need to be the hopeful, happy, honest storyteller, and continue doing whatever you are doing and kind of think this is a nasty plot twist, this is not the story you are living. And 100 percent is not the story’s end. Because somebody somewhere told me that life mein filmon ki tarah, anth mein, sad theek ho jaata hai. Aur agar theek na ho, toh anth nahi hai. Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost. And I believe in him because I believe that goodness begets goodness."
Khan expressed that the 'Indian of the Year 2023' award is dedicated to his family. Reflecting on a personal tradition, he shared that in the past, every award he received was considered a gift for one of his children, bringing joy to their lives. Given the challenging experiences his family has gone through in the last four to five years, he now believes that there is no one more deserving of a heartfelt cheer than his children and wife.
Some years back, when I used to get awards, I decided that every award I get, I take it as a gift for one of my kids. It will bring cheer to their lives. I truly believe in the last four-five years that my family has seen, my children have seen, my wife has seen, I think nobody deserves a bigger cheer right now than them. So I am taking this award back home for them.
