Gangubai Kathiawadi release date: Alia Bhatt's ambitious biopic Gangubai Kathiawadi finally has a release date. There were reports that it was unclear whether the film will have a theatrical release or will opt for a direct OTT release.

The team of Gangubai Kathiawadi cleared all doubts on Thursday and announced that the film will have a theatrical release on February 25, 2022. The announcement was shared by Sanjay Leela Bhansali's production house and actor Ajay Devgn on Twitter.
"She rose to power amidst the flames of hardships. The wait is about to get over," Devgn wrote in his tweet on September 30.
Alia Bhatt too shared the announcement from her official handle, tweeting, "Bringing to you a part of my heart & soul, #GangubaiKathiawadi releasing in cinemas near you on February 25, 2022."
Apart from Gangubai Kathiawadi, Bhatt will be seen in Karan Johar's upcoming film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani opposite Ranveer Singh. The actor recently wrapped up her film Darlings, which will mark her debut as a producer, and also stars Shefali Shah, Vijay Varma and Roshan Mathew in key roles.
What is Gangubai Kathiawadi about?
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the biopic is based on life of mafia queen Gangubai, who was a brothel owner. She is known to have championed the rights of sex workers, operating from the Hiramandi red light area. Because of her social work, Gangubai's statue was erected in the Kamathipura area. Bhansali's film is based on chapters from Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges' book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai.
In March this year, the Mazagaon court in Mumbai had summoned Bhansali and Bhatt after a defamation case was filed by Kathiawadi's adopted son Babuji Rawji Shah against them and writers Zaidi and Borges. Shah stated in his plea that Bhansali's upcoming film tarnished Kathiawadi's image and her depiction in the film was "defamatory" and factually incorrect.
UPDATE: After minting over 100 crore rupees at the box office, Gangubai Kathiawadi will be coming to OTT in the month of April. Streaming giant Netflix took to social media to share that the film will be available for streaming from April 26 on the platform. Bhatt, who recently got married to Ranbir Kapoor in an intimate ceremony surrounded by friends and family, too shared the OTT release date of the film in the stories section on Instagram with a heart emoji. The actor is now gearing up for the release of her film Brahmastra, in which she'll be seen alongside her husband.
