Cruella trailer review: Walt Disney Studios, Wednesday, dropped the trailer for Emma Stone-starrer Cruella and true to nature, the actor seems to have hit it out of the ballpark yet again. Stone, in this live-action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, stuns in a spunky, glamorous rendition of the iconic villain Cruella de Vil.

Set in 1970s London, Cruella charts the journey of young Estella, whose turbulent life forms the basis of her villain origin story that transforms her into de Vil.

Set for a May 28 release, Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie and stars, besides Stone, Emma Thompson, Mark Strong, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

Cruella Trailer Review: A Human Look At The Salt N' Pepper Villain

Cruella de Vil has been known, for much of the time she has been around since Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians, as a figure meant to be abhorred and disdained. (How else is one supposed to estimate a character who kidnaps puppies for fur?)

As go villain origin stories, for instance like in Joker, there is an attempt to give the audience an insight into what made them how they are. Which is what Cruella promises to do as well, with a look at how greed overpowers the heiress' better senses.

Humanisation of villains may often seem like unwarranted whitewash. But it's interesting, for it puts the basest of our own proclivities into perspective when we watch stories like these play out on the big screen. Because we've all got a little de-Vil inside of us, don't we?

The first poster for the film released earlier this week, showing Stone in monochrome as she sported a dark lip and bewitching eyes. The actor has previously called the film "pretty trippy." And honestly, the trailer says it's going to be nothing less.
