The biopic of Whitney Houston named I Wanna Dance With Somebody has found its star after a worldwide search. British actress Naomi Ackie has been roped in to play the role of the legendary singer. The biopic has been named after the iconic song of the same name. Anthony McCarten of Bohemian Rhapsody fame wrote the screenplay and the film will be directed by Stella Meghie. The film will tentatively release on Thanksgiving 2022.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, the director said, “We spent the better part of the last year in an exhaustive search for an actress who could embody Whitney Houston."
"Naomi Ackie impressed us at every stage of the process. I was moved by her ability to capture the stage presence of a global icon while bringing humanity to her interior life." she further added.
Whitney Houston is the late popular performer who needs no introduction. She earned six Grammys over her expansive career. One of the best-known recording artists of all time, Houston sold more than 200 million records worldwide, with mega blockbuster songs such as How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance With Somebody among others. She made her acting debut in the 1992 hit The Bodyguard, recording six songs for the film’s soundtrack, including I Will Always Love You.

Born and raised in Walthamstow, London, her first acting role was at the age of 11. Naomi played the angel Gabriel in a school nativity play. She studied at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and graduated in 2012.
Her breakthrough role was in Lady Macbeth (2016). The role earned her the Most Promising Newcomer award in British Independent Film Awards 2017. Naomi received more popularity for her role in Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.
Furthermore, she has also starred in a number of series like The End of the ******* World, Doctor Who, The Bisexual and a few others.
