What is it with Bollywood film trailers wanting to pack in all the action on offer into few minutes? This is a complaint that I had with trailers of many recent films, including Taapsee Pannu starrer Haseen Dillruba. For thrillers and war films, long tell-all trailer seem to do more harm than good. The viewers get a frame-by-frame demo of what they can expect from the film. Instead of building hype for films, these trailers are like mini synopsis that reveal character arcs, giving away most of the major twists and thrills. Why would anyone want to sit through a two-hour-long film, if they have already seen the best VFX sequences, the choicest of dialogues and the most gorgeous of shots a film has to offer, already in a two minute trailer?

Another grudge that I have with Bollywood film trailers these days- they are excruciatingly long. The trailer for Bhuj:The Pride Of India stands at three minutes and 21 seconds. That's the length of most Hindi film songs these days! Films with a run time of three hours are a rarity now. So what's the point of lengthy film trailers, that test patience of the viewers? What's the strategy?

There's one thing good about the trailer though. Surprisingly, the two female characters in the film get good screen time in the trailer. Even Nora Fatehi gets two dialogues, despite the fact that the supporting cast (we know who is the lead of the film, don't we?) mostly consists of men.

Hindi filmmakers need to show some faith in their craft, and stop packing in too much into their trailers in an attempt to woe audience. There is no harm in experimenting with trailers, just as they are tinkering with new subjects, especially when OTT releases during the pandemic have changed the game, at least for the time being.
