Mangalsutra To Sad Models: Everytime Designer Sabyasachi Courted Controversy in 2021

Ranging from the recent "Mangalsutra Ad", to having legal notice served and getting trolled for his price-quality Sabyasachi has courted multiple controversies in 2021. Even though celebrities swear by his designs the acclaimed designer has often found himself at the receiving end of not so nice comments. Vidya Balan, Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra to latest Patralekha all went for his couture on the wedding day. Here is a look at 3 major rows that the designer found himself in the year 2021.

3 major Sabyasachi Controversies 2021:

1. “Sad looking” models: Photograph that did not go well with netizens

The recent flak was witnessed on the Sabyasachi’s ad for his Autumn/Winter 2021 collection featuring his jewellery range as well. . People stormed the social media pages of the designer with comments like- “are the models depressed?”, “who wants to look like widows”, “all look mourning”.

While many feel that the posts were aimed to display the confidence in a woman without any heavy makeup, others went disappointed with the promotion of perpetually sad-looking models by the luxury brand. Read more about it here.

2.Sabyasachi had to pull down the “Royal Bengal Tiger inspired Mangalsutra Ad”

The ace designer was tendered a legal notice by the Bombay High Court advocate for hurting Hindu sentiment and disregarding the religious ornament sacred to Hindu marriages. The notice also added that Mangalsutra was believed to be within innerwear and not to be showcased like the one promoted on the designer's page.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister, Narottam Mishra also cautioned him of direct action if any “hurtful” posts are made in the future.

The luxury brand withdrew the ad for Royal Bengal Mangalsutra after widespread outrage.

3.Sabyasachi X H&M Controversy

As soon as the catalogue of the famous Sabyasachi X H&M was released on H&M application and other online sites, people could not absorb high pricing figures for cotton sarees, and basic tee-turned-as-blouse that every Indian woman has in their wardrobe.

Many even uploaded pictures of their grandmas and mother wearing similar saree, but not paying huge to purchase it.

Past controversies

Reacting to the responses, the designer issued a statement saying that he received thousands of emails and messages overnight and they are not just “overwhelming” but “plain baffling”.

The ace designer earlier received flack when he said during a Harvard speech “shame on women not knowing to drape a saree” later he offered a statement of clarification that his statement was nowhere related to "gender issues". He also referred to overdressed women with heavy makeup and jewelry to be wounded from inside.
