Sputnik V is expected to be available in the market from next week. This is the third vaccine and first foreign-made vaccine to be approved for use in the country after Covishield and Covaxin. The first dose of the vaccine was administered in Hyderabad on Friday (May 14) as part of a limited pilot. It is also reported that doses of Sputnik V which are made in India are likely to be cheaper.

The vaccine is available in both liquid and powder form. The liquid form needs to be stored below -18 degrees but the powdered form can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees (stability tests ongoing).

Sputnik vaccine cost: The COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V is currently priced at 948 + 5 percent GST per dose, i.e. Rs. 995.40. Made in India shots are expected to be cheaper.

The first consignment of 1.5 million doses reached India on May 1 and received regulatory clearance from the Central Drugs Laboratory, Kasauli, on May 13. The Russian vaccine is one of only three vaccines in the world with such a high efficacy rate, Pfizer and Moderna vaccines being the other two. The two-dose vaccine also has most authorisations granted globally, priced at less than $10 per dose in international markers.

Last week, officials noted that an estimated 360 million Indians will receive the vaccine Sputnik V by the end of March 2022 as India will have approximately 361 million doses of the vaccine.

The vaccine has already been administered to more than 20 lakh people worldwide. Currently, India is recording over 3 lakh COVID-19 cases every day and is struggling for vaccines as government facilities run out of doses. According to data published in The Lancet, the vaccine efficacy was 91.8 percent in participants older than 60 years.
