Breastfeeding is not only rewarding but also overwhelming for new mothers. Hence, finding the right balance and seeking timely support is important for emotional and physical well-being during early motherhood. Here, the expert helps to navigate through the motherhood journey with appropriate support and care.
The early days of motherhood are filled with love, learning, and often, exhaustion. For many women, breastfeeding is a central part of this journey and an intimate way to nourish and bond with their newborn. However, breastfeeding is not always easy and can be a daunting task for many.
New mothers often tend to face challenges ranging from latching difficulties and pain to supply concerns and sleepless nights, all of which can lead to emotional burnout. Some feel they are “failing” at breastfeeding simply because they’re overwhelmed and confused. It’s important to remember that breastfeeding technique should be understood with time, patience, and professional guidance. And while breast milk offers excellent nutritional and immune support to babies, the mental and physical health of the mother is just as important.
Burnout among new mothers is more common than we talk about. The constant feeding, frequent wake-ups, and the pressure to “do it right” can drain even the most enthusiastic moms. Feelings of anxiety, guilt, and isolation can creep in, especially if there is a lack of support from family, partners, or experts. The woman will be exhausted and may also feel frustrated, irritated, and cranky. It is better to seek support from an expert.
Balancing breastfeeding with rest, nutrition, and emotional well-being is essential. Simple but essential measures like accepting help with chores, practising skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo care method) for bonding and milk flow, taking short breaks, and nourishing your body with healthy food and hydration can make a huge difference. It is also equally important to reach out when something doesn’t feel right, be it pain during feeding, doubts about supply, or emotional exhaustion.
Support from a lactation consultant can be life-changing. Whether it’s correcting a latch, guiding a feeding schedule, or simply reassuring a mother that she’s doing well, professional support bridges the gap between stress and success. Peer support groups, both in person and online, can also offer comfort and encouragement to mothers. So, with the right support, balanced expectations, and a kind approach to yourself, breastfeeding can be an important part of your journey, not a concerning issue.
Reach out, speak up, and know that you’re not alone. Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed to seek help.
