Breastfeeding is critical for the health and well-being of both the mother and the child. In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to consume and medicinally nurture a newborn. However, it is often overwhelmed by misconceptions and myths, which brings about confusion and undue mental stress for new mothers. Such myths can also hamper a mother's positive experience with breastfeeding and lower their confidence in their breastfeeding abilities.

In order to help mothers get the best assistance and encouragement, it is essential to debunk myths and misconceptions and fact-check the breastfeeding journey.

Doctor bursts breastfeeding myths

1. Breastfeeding Is Always Easy - Breastfeeding comes with its own set of challenges, even though it's a natural process. New mothers often experience problems with baby latching on, pain in the nipples, and even concerns regarding the supply of milk. These challenges are quite common, and with the right assistance from lactation consultants, these problems can be solved. Having the assistance of a professional is the right path. Breastfeeding in the beginning and in later stages can be difficult, and it is completely fine to seek help.

2. You Must Start Breastfeeding Immediately after Birth - Even though breastfeeding should ideally commence right after birth, there are cases where it is not practical. Due to medical conditions concerning the baby or the mother, some mothers may take a little longer. While the objective should ideally be to start breastfeeding as early as is practical, the attention of caregivers should be to achieve it in a gradual step approach with the proper support. Take your time and always remember to take the right support.

3. Breastfeeding Should Never Hurt - Breastfeeding is a two-way street, as both the mother and the baby need to get used to the process. While some discomfort in the beginning is common, anything above the normal threshold should be treated with caution. There could be issues such as improper latching or breast engorgement. Always remember that pain after breastfeeding is normal, but in cases of severe pain, professional help is the right step to take to achieve a breastfeeding experience that is enjoyable.

4. A Mother's Diet Directly Affects Milk Quality - While eating a healthy and balanced diet is important for the mother’s health, there's no need to follow a strict diet to improve the quality of breast milk. Breast milk is designed to meet the baby’s nutritional needs, and occasional indulgence in certain foods does not harm the milk. If the baby shows signs of sensitivity to certain foods, such as dairy, it’s a good idea to speak to a Nutritionist for advice.

5. Exercise Will Lower Milk Supply - A lot of new mothers may fear that exercising might reduce their milk supply, but this is not true. Moderate physical activity is good for one’s health and does not negatively impact milk production. As with anything, it's best to listen to your body, stay hydrated, and not push yourself during physical activity, so you do not overexert yourself. For concerns, reaching out to your physician would be best.

6. You Can’t Breastfeed If you’re Sick - In most cases, a mother can continue to breastfeed their baby even when sick, and in fact, it can be good for the child. When a mother is sick, her body produces some antibodies that are transferred via breastmilk which would protect the child. On the other hand, if the sickness is infectious or needs special care like HIV or active tuberculosis, a discussion with a doctor is in order on whether breastfeeding can continue.

7. Formula Feeding Is Just as Good as Breastfeeding - Formula feeding is another alternative, but it falls short of breast milk in many ways. Breast milk contains many antibodies and nutrients that protect the baby’s systems and aid in proper growth. It is highly recommended by doctors that breastfeeding should be the only source of food for children until they are six months old, although a substitute in the form of formula is acceptable in cases where breastfeeding is not possible.

8. Extended Breastfeeding Is Unnecessary - Breastfeeding can continue well beyond the first year of life, and many experts agree that extended breastfeeding continues to provide important nutritional and emotional benefits. Breast milk helps support the baby’s immune system and strengthens the bond between mother and child. The decision to breastfeed for longer should be based on what feels right for both the mother and child.

The journey of breastfeeding, which can be blissful and a cherishing experience to a mother and to the baby, is often dotted with numerous misconceptions that must be weeded out. Each mother's journey with breastfeeding is unique and personal, and that is perfectly okay.
