Betty Diamond Women In Medicine And Science

Diamond is a pioneer in the scientific research of autoimmune diseases, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus.

Diamond work as director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the Feinstein Institutes. For most of her career, she helped fellow female investigators navigate their careers in the male-dominated medical research arena. She is also a director of MD/Ph.D. programs at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Diamond dedicated her career of four decades to the study of DNA-reactive B cells, autoantibodies, and their origin and effect on the body. What impact do these antibodies have on the brain and how they may contribute to changes in cognition or behavior in patients with lupus?

Diamond initiated the Advancing Women in Science and Medicine ( AWESOME) group at the Feinstein Institutes in 2010. The aim was to help advance women scientists' career development and opportunities. Diamond raised over $3 million to support women investigators during that span.

While commenting on biases in Medicine Industry, She claimed that women in science and medicine continue to face challenges due to gender bias, and one of my goals is to empower all women scientists to facilitate the progress to greater equity.

She also served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Rheumatology and the Scientific Council of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a member with National Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Diamond took a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She has headed the rheumatology divisions at Albert Einstein School of Medicine and Columbia University Medical Center.

Every year AAMC group presents Medicine and Science Leadership Awards to recognise the contributions of women in Science. It first started in 1995, and over 30 individuals and organizations have been recognized so far.
