Meet Pragya Mishra, OpenAI's First Employee In India

Pragya Mishra is OpenAI's first employee in India with a professional history of working with Meta and Truecaller. She would be appointed as the head of government relations.

With over 1.4 billion population and a fast-growing economy, the Indian tech market is ripe for the picking of companies like OpenAI. And according to a Bloomberg report, the company that most notably launched ChatGPT in 2022, is hiring its first Indian employee, Pragya Mishra. With a rich experience of working with Truecaller AB and Meta Inc., Mishra would be appointed as the head of government relations.

Who Is Pragya Mishra?

Pragya Mishra completed her MBA from the International Management Institute In 2012 and has a diploma in Bargaining and Negotiations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. During her tenure at Truecaller, where she served as the director of public affairs, she worked with key stakeholders, investors and media partners to grow the company and achieve its objectives. Prior to this, she also worked at Meta, where she was responsible for spearheading WhatsApp's campaign against misinformation in 2018. She has also worked with Ernst & Young as well as the Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi.

Pragya Mishra brings with her the rich experience of working with external stakeholders to leverage the company's position. In addition to her professional achievements, Mishra is also a golfer who has represented India at several international tournaments from 1988 to 2012. She is also an influencer and podcaster who hosts the Praagyan podcast, where she teaches mindfulness and meditation. 

OpenAI's Future In India 

With such a strategic hire, OpenAI seeks to expand and capture the Indian tech market. As the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, recently commented, AI has huge potential to be incorporated with governmental systems, and favourable governmental policies could help foreign companies contribute to the same. With Pragya Mishra starting her tenure sometime at the end of this month, more Indian employees are expected to be hired by the company.
