The tension between Russia and Ukraine has been escalating fast since the Russian president declared war on Ukraine. The world is filled with negativity and is hoping for improved conditions. Amid such despairing times, a video of a Ukrainian soldier wearing the military uniform has been floating. The woman in the video is saying “I’m still alive, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, everything will be fine. Long live Ukraine”.

The identity of the woman and the original source of the video is yet to be known. This video amidst these situations has proved to be a ray of hope coming directly from the horse's mouth i.e the woman fighting the front. When the country is facing war and people are losing hope this optimistic attitude and message of this woman soldier is proving to be comforting and reassuring.

Around 36,000 women are fighting the Ukraine-Russia war and the hopeful message is a motivation for all the soldiers fighting the war. In December last year, the Ukrainian defense ministry issued an order that increased the scope of conscription for women in case of a war-like situation. Women now make up almost 15% of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Since the Ukrainian parliament ordered full military mobilisation this share is expected to have increased.

They serve alongside men in combat positions under a 2018 law although the army granted women the right to fight in combat positions in 2016. An order was issued that expanded the scope of conscription for women in case of war-like situations. The order stated that women aged between 18 to 60 years have to register with the local conscription office. They can be from different professional areas like bank employees, media personnel, restaurant staff, drivers, and anyone working.

People have been really touched by the video and one person tweeted, “This is simultaneously so beautiful, and just heart-wrenching. I wish her a long life, sunny days, and bird song. And a stable, safe #Ukraine.”

The viral video is receiving immense love and support over social media and the Ukrainian soldier is being applauded for her bravery and an optimistic attitude. The war will end, leaders will shake hands but the misery and what the citizens have gone through will not repeal.
