A woman who reportedly violated COVID-19 protocol by not masking up in public was thrashed by Madhya Pradesh police, a video that surfaced on Wednesday showed. In the one-and-a-half-minute clip, a female officer can be seen forcing the woman inside the police vehicle as she tries to resist. The news was first reported by NDTVwhich said the woman and her daughter were out to buy groceries. Neither had a proper mask on their faces, with the daughter only covering hers with a dupatta. Police, as seen in the video, even drag the woman by her hair as she falls down on the road.

National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognisance of the issue and sought investigation in the case. "@NCWIndia is perturbed by this incident of brutality with a woman and has taken cognisance of the matter. Chairperson @sharmarekha has written to DGP #MadhyaPradesh seeking proper & time-bound investigation in the matter," the commission tweeted Thursday.

The video has also caught the eye of social media users now calling out police violence and extreme action against citizens. This is, however, not the first such video to have gone viral. In Bhubaneswar last month, a young man was thrashed by police for entering a temple without a mask. The same month, an auto driver in Indore, Madhya Pradesh was beaten by police for not being properly masked.

As of May 19, Madhya Pradesh has recorded a total of 7,42,718 coronavirus cases, with a daily count average of 5000 cases, and over 7000 deaths. Details on India's ongoing vaccination program here.
