Many women across the globe dream of being able to take a long, relaxing stroll at midnight independently with music playing through earphones, wearing a dress of their choosing and comfort, and not having to always be in alert mode, anticipating a perpetrator to pounce from just about anywhere.

But standing in the shoes of women in Arab countries, doing basic things such as having divorce rights, inheritance, stepping out of their home without a male companion, education, workplace parity, restricted or lack of political representation, and exercising basic and fundamental rights, remains a distant dream.

Although there’s no intention of proposing a comparison here, the undeniable truth is that, compared to women living in Arab countries, many women living in other parts of the globe have relatively better lives.

Arab Women Expresses Desire

The sad reality was prompted by a recent video posted by a Mexican woman featuring herself jogging along a street, which amassed numerous responses from Arab women who referred to it as their fantasy.

The incident occurred when a TikTok user named @OaolaLarragoiti shared a video of her rainy-day running routine. Little did she expect that a simple part of her daily life would be a dream for someone else. The video shows a Mexican woman jogging along a rainy street wearing black shorts and tanks with her long tresses let loose.

The video soon found its way to X (formerly Twitter) when a user named @khaledYousefff reshared it with the caption, “Arab girls comments on a TikTok of a Mexican girl running are so f***ing heartbreaking.”

This prompted netizens to comment with a sense of sadness and empathy. Soon, several women from Arab countries poured in comments, saying that this was their dream. A user pointed out how saddening it was that she was not allowed to do this. Another user commented that she hopes to experience this feeling sometime. A third user said the woman was living her dream, and a fourth user said that a normal day in a Mexican woman’s life is a huge dream that all Arab women dream of.
